From the Teatro Regio to Palazzo Marchi: a tour through the heart of Parma, taking in the two places that best represent the ducal era of ‘Le Petit Paris’, passing through squares, neighbourhoods and monuments that embody the soul of Parma.
The tour includes a visit to the Teatro Regio and a guided walk past the Palazzo della Pilotta, the Cathedral, the Baptistery and Strada Repubblica, ending at the Palazzo Marchi, where you will visit the courtyard and the rooms featuring the original 18th-century décor and the family’s art collection.
“I remember perfectly the first time I stepped inside Palazzo Marchi and the sense of wonder I felt as I entered each of the rooms! I used to walk past it every day, on my way to work, on my way home, and during my strolls through the historic centre, but habit is the enemy of curiosity and I had never wondered what lay behind the majestic portal overlooking the stretch of Via Emilia that runs through the heart of Parma. Then, during a Verdi Festival, I met Mrs Anna, the owner of the palace and a descendant of Antonio Marchi, who had purchased it in 1859, and her love for this residence sparked my curiosity. Built between 1770 and 1774, today the Palazzo is an elegant and refined exhibition space. The grand staircase and the halls encapsulate over two centuries of Parma’s history, and the paintings, furnishings and stuccoes—as precious as jewels—evoke the splendour of the Duchy, as if time had never passed and everything had remained exactly as it was.

ERIKA TEDESCHI, A SPECIAL GUIDE
I was born and raised in Parma and feel a deep connection to my city because of its dynamic and dual nature: that of a refined ducal city and a lively working-class neighbourhood. Having always been passionate about art, I attended the Conservatoire of Music and graduated from the University of Bologna with a degree in Music and Performing Arts. For years I have worked on the stage of the Teatro Regio as a stagehand and set designer, an engaging, exclusive and ‘secret’ profession, as it still holds ancient and hidden knowledge, revealing only its marvellous side to the public. The world of theatre has certainly enhanced my artistic sensibility, allowing me to embark on a new and exciting path: that of a tour guide, a role I have been fulfilling since 2015. The significance of this new professional development lies in being able to convey passion and knowledge to people within a context that is both light-hearted and profound—a quality that only music, theatre and art can offer.
