PAGANINI AUDITORIUM

“Stripping structures back to their essentials means working by subtraction: taking things away is a gamble. When you seek lightness, you automatically discover something else of great value, something of paramount importance in terms of poetic language: transparency.”

Designed by Renzo Piano and opened in 2001, the Paganini Auditorium represents the most significant project in the redevelopment of one of the city’s main industrial areas from the early decades of the 20th century. Dedicated to the musician whom Maria Luigia appointed as head of the Ducal Orchestra in 1836, it stands in the urban park that was home to the historic Eridania sugar factory from 1899 to 1968. In this garden, Renzo Piano drew inspiration from the imposing perimeter walls of the building that once housed the sugar-processing machinery: 80 metres long, covered by steel trusses, accompanied by an ancillary building used as a maintenance workshop and a 45-metre-high chimney, the factory provided the layout for the concert hall and the rehearsal room, as well as for the service areas and technical installations.

The foyer is arranged over two levels connected by a wide staircase: on the lower level are the cloakroom facilities, whilst the upper level provides access to the bar and the auditorium. The auditorium seats 780 people on a single, gently sloping level designed to enhance the view of the stage, with the park’s Lebanese cedars, oaks and plane trees forming a backdrop. Developing the metaphor of a sugar factory transformed into a sound factory, the architect thus reinvents the spaces by creating a visual ‘telescope’ that retains the factory’s thick side walls and contrasts them with two entirely glazed transverse walls, which allow a view of the surrounding park whilst blurring the boundaries between artificial and natural space—a concept that animates the entire project. Numerous technical and structural measures combine to recreate the conditions for optimal acoustics, utilising the space as a large sound box: acoustic panels made of glass and wood distribute sound throughout the hall; the suspended ceiling reflects sound energy and acts as an absorber; the windows are fitted on the inside with appropriately oriented reflective panels.

The Paganini Auditorium forms an integral part of Paganini Congressi, the result of a spectacular architectural and functional restoration of an old industrial complex. These spaces, which have previously hosted musical and cultural events, are now available for conferences, events and training courses in an exclusive setting, thanks in part to the privilege of being nestled within a park spanning over 12 hectares in the heart of the city of Parma.

Paganini Congressi is the operating brand of the Paganini Consortium, which comprises the Paganini Auditorium – the ‘acoustic box’ designed by Renzo Piano – and other spaces: the CPM Toscanini, the Spazi Ipogei and the Parco della Musica, which forms the backdrop to the complex. Founded in January 2015 on the initiative of the two main musical institutions in the city of Parma: the Fondazione Teatro Regio and the Fondazione Arturo Toscanini. The Paganini Congressi complex provides the ideal setting and the perfect venue for a meeting of culture and technology.
