The Utopia of the Petit Bourgeois
by Henning Brockhaus, director
Mahagonny is a metropolis of pleasure and entertainment. A paradise of whiskey, endless binging and lustful brothels; a place where money can buy everything but happiness, becoming useless in the end. The protagonist Jimmy Mahoney imposes the law of “everything is allowed” with the impetus of a capitalistic revolutionary.
Everyone pursues fun and enjoyment exclusively by spending money, rendering their desire limited and twisted. Eventually, Jimmy Mahoney becomes the victim of his own intentions: he cumulates debt to help a friend of his as the loan he needs is denied to him. Jimmy, now penniless, is sentenced to death. In Mahagonny, the lack of money is forbidden. Eventually, Mahagonny crumbles amid citizens’ protests condemning the atrocities of capitalism through violent rioting. Even though the dimension of workers is missing in Mahagonny, we have created a background scenography representing a world made of poor and exploited people. They exist as a mere shadow, though their presence is distressing. We were also inspired by Edward Hopper’s American painting to realize both the space and the costumes. America created the dream of happiness with capitalism, but wealth is based on crime. In Mahagonny, entrepreneurs are criminals, becoming then their own judges. They founded a city of enjoyment which promised to realize all their dreams: The Utopia of the Petit Bourgeois.
