Each Autumn, around Giuseppe Verdi’s birthday on 10 October, when his two hometowns of Parma and Busseto in Italy vibrate with unique colours and fragrances that speak to our collective imagination, Festival Verdi comes to life: a full month of music, opera, exhibitions and conferences to celebrate the great Maestro in his native lands.
Festival Verdi is the only festival exclusively devoted to studying and staging the works of Giuseppe Verdi. It was inaugurated by the Fondazione Teatro Regio di Parma in 2001, one hundred years after Verdi’s death. Since then, extraordinarily talented artists have been part of the Festival, including conductors: Bruno Bartoletti, Riccardo Chailly, Daniele Gatti, Lorin Maazel, Zubin Mehta, Riccardo Muti, Daniel Oren, Antonio Pappano and Yuri Temirkanov and directors: Hugo De Ana, Dante Ferretti, Peter Greenaway, Denis Krief, Pier’Alli, Pier Luigi Pizzi, Stefano Poda, Pier Luigi Samaritani, Graham Vick.
The International Friends of Festival Verdi provide advice and financial support to the Fondazione Teatro Regio di Parma in order to enhance the prestige of Festival Verdi, stimulating and sharing new reflections on the music of Giuseppe Verdi, involving opera stars and young talented artists, cultivating Verdi’s spirit throughout the world, to spark emotion, while transmitting the fascination and artistry of Opera.
